How far is your commute? How long does it take you each way?

4.0 miles each way, about 18-22 minutes.

What is your commute mode and what made you decide to commute this way?

I ride my bike as much as I can. My commute is only two or three minutes slower by bike, and I get fresh air, a bit of exercise, and I don't have to find parking!

What do you enjoy about your commute?

I love it when I cross paths with another commuter, especially on a lousy weather day, and we acknowledge each other. I also love seeing the sun rise and how the daylight shifts just a bit each day.

Do you have any positive, interesting stories from your commute?

Yes! I was able to convince 3 of my coworkers to join me during Bike Month last year, and it was awesome to ride down J Street as a group. Also, there is a different engagement with the people along the way--I see the same woman at the bus stop I go by, and the guy at the car dealership who is parking when I go by most days. Sometimes people yell rude things, but more often than not people are encouraging when they seem me huffing and puffing up one of the hills on my route.

Do you think you save money by commuting this way?

Yes! Even though my commute is short, driving 8 miles of city driving in a vehicle with average efficiency of 25 mph means ever three days I'm saving at least $5, and each week close to $10, and that's very conservative math!

How does your company help accommodate your commute option? (ex: bike racks, free bus pass, vanpool subsidy, flexible work hours, telework incentives, etc.)

My [employer] has started to have more bike parking and storage facilities, although they could be better.

Is there anything your company could do better to accommodate your commute option?

If there was outdoor covered and locked bike storage, like a keyed shed over a bike rack, it would make it easier for me! Right now, I have to carry my bike up a flight of stairs.

What would you say to your fellow employees to inspire them to try using a commute option other than driving alone in their car?

You just need to do it once!
