Bike commuter photo Cindy S.Where do you work and what is your role in the company?

Pierce College District

How far is your commute? How long does it take you each way?

My commute is 8.8 miles one way, and it takes me about 45 minutes.

What is your commute mode and what made you decide to commute this way?

I ride my e-bike to work as much as possible! I’ve been working at Pierce College since May 2023, and so far, I have ridden my bike 3-5 times a week depending on the weather. It’s a fun way to include exercise into my daily routine! It also saves me money on gas, of course.

What do you enjoy about your commute?

I commute 8.8 miles one way, and I love the different terrains I get to experience. I bike through two parks (Kobayashi Park in University Place and Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood), but I also ride through an industrialized part of South Tacoma that includes a pretty smelly feed store. There are lots of residential neighborhoods and schools too.

Do you have any interesting stories from your commute?

I love seeing the same students waiting for the school bus or walking to school every morning. We say good morning to each other, and I feel part of a community when I ride my bike!

Do you think you save money by commuting this way?

For sure! I don’t know the amount, but between gas and vehicle maintenance, it’s significant!

How does your company help accommodate your commute option? (ex: bike racks, free bus pass, vanpool subsidy, flexible work hours, telework incentives, etc.)

Pierce College does have a few bike racks on site.

Is there anything your company could do better to accommodate your commute option?

We need more covered bike parking!

What would you say to your fellow employees to inspire them to try using a commute option other than driving alone in their car?

It’s safe and fun to ride a bike to work. If you live too far from campus, an e-bike may be a good idea. And of course, safe route planning is key. I spent weeks looking at maps and talking to fellow cyclists to design a safe route from South Tacoma to Lakewood, but I managed to do it, and so can you! Test your route on a weekend first and ride with a friend for safety.
